My Story Of Being Diagnosed With Crohn's Disease
Years ago no one knew what Crohn's Disease was unless you were diagnosed with it. I was diagnosed with this dreadful disease back in 1984. I had no idea what it was and didn't know anyone that had it.
I was experiencing these symptoms:
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Reduced appetite
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
I was a new State Trooper when I was experiencing these symptoms, I had called my family doctor and made an appointment. He told me I was under stress and gave me some drops to put in my juice in the morning. Well guess what, that didn't help.
I had lost 35 lbs., I could barely lift my right leg and was sick all of the time. I know what you are thinking, how did you drive the cruiser if you couldn't lift your right leg. Well I just used my left foot. God must of been looking over me as I didn't get into any accidents doing that. I would not recommend anyone driving with their left foot.
While I was feeling this way, a friend and I had planned a trip to England. Just before I was to go, my leg got worse and I went to the emergency room. They told me I had an infection and gave me a prescription. I told them about the trip and they told me I could go.
So while I was on my trip, I had a bump grow on the right groin area. It got bigger and was extremely red. The people we were staying with took me to their doctor. The doctor asked me if I had been around cows. Really? No I haven't been around cows. Lets just say he had no clue what was wrong with me. He did give me a shot of penicillin.
When our trip was over, I came home in a wheel chair. At that time, I could barely walk. I did have a follow up appointment the following day. Thank God I got to see a different doctor. He took one look at my leg and admitted me into the hospital.
The following day they had done an exploratory surgery only to find out that the bump on my leg was an strangulated hernia, which was infected. I was just lucky that it didn't burst. That is how I found out that I had Crohn's.
I was in the hospital for approximately a month. My doctor did not know if he was going to let me go back to work or not because of the stressful job I had. I was very appreciative that he did sign the paperwork to allow me to go back to work when I was able to.
Tomorrow I will discuss other symptoms to look for and dive more into what Crohn's Disease is.
