How To Find Great Keywords

Finding keywords are very important, especially if you are doing niche marketing.  I know a lot of people are using Google Keyword tool but there are other places to look for them that not many people know about. Two main things you need to worry about when looking for keywords are traffic and competition.  Traffic is good (higher the better) but the lower the competition the better it is to rank in the search engines. An example of this would be fly fishing.  There are 1,000,000 global monthly searches (gms)  and 550,000 local monthly searches (lms)  These are good numbers.  Low competition words that you can write about would be: loop fly fishing (gms) 2,400 and (lms) are 880, fly fishing basics (gms) 1,900 and (lms) 1,600, and fly fishing casting (gms) 4,400 and (lms) 1900.  There is a lot of traffic looking for the keyword fly fishing, but there are some low competition among these words. It is important to look at both traffic and competition, but some people put more weight on the competition.  I know some people who rather have a (gms) of under 400 and some lower than that.  The lower the competition the better. Some people pay for tools to find keywords but I use the old fashion way, free.   I do usually start with Google Keyword tool but there are a couple of other places I look on Google for them that not too many people are aware of when doing keyword research. The second is Google Trends.  Google Trends is a great tool as it gives you a graph to show you how well that keyword is doing.  You do not want to write about a keyword if the trend keeps going down.  Fly fishing is a word that has been on the decline.  You usually want a word that is climbing rather than falling. Another thing that Google trends show you the top articles that have been searched for regarding fly fishing.  One of the articles is using fly fishing for therapy.  They talk about an article, " Obama makes good on Montana fly-fishing promise."  There are usually 5 to 6 articles that are displayed on the side of the graph. Another feature that Google Trends has, it gives you a list of the top 10 countries and the top 10 cities that are searching for that word.  You could target the countries or the cities with your article, especially with your ads if you are using ppc. The third tool is Google Insights.  Google Insights also gives you a graph and top headlines that has been searched.  What is different from Google Trends is that they give you a demographic map with the top ten countries.  The one thing that this tool has that Google Trends does not have as it displays the top 10 keywords that are being searched for as well as the top 9 or 10 keywords that are on the rise.  You can use these to your benefit. The fourth tool are other people's blog.  Anyone that is using SEO, which is most, there will be key words or tags displayed on their blog.  You want to target blogs that are doing well.  See what they are doing and copy it.  I don't mean copy their posts but read about an article or a product that you are using and write about it.  Some of their tags may have a lot of competition, so do your research.
